About the painting

A rainy afternoon at West Georgia and Granville becomes a vivid portrait of Vancouver in this original oil painting by Canadian artist Graham Watts.

The historic Hudson’s Bay building rises above pedestrians moving purposefully through the rain. Colourful umbrellas, illuminated windows and reflected city lights bring warmth and movement to the cool blue streets below.

Rich blues establish the atmosphere, while flashes of red, yellow, orange and white animate the composition. Reflections in the wet pavement extend the city’s lights across the foreground, creating depth and making the viewer feel as though they are standing at the intersection.

This is Vancouver as many people remember it: rainy, energetic, beautifully illuminated and constantly in motion.

The story behind Hudson’s Bay

Vancouver rain has a way of transforming familiar streets. Pavement becomes reflective, architectural details soften and ordinary lights suddenly glow against the blue-grey atmosphere.

In this painting, Graham captures that transformation at one of downtown Vancouver’s most recognizable intersections. The Hudson’s Bay building anchors the composition while pedestrians and umbrellas create rhythm through the foreground.

Expressive brushwork gives the city a sense of movement without losing the distinctive character of the location. The result is both a recognizable Vancouver cityscape and an atmospheric memory of the city.

How this painting works in a room

The deep blues, slate greys and touches of warm colour make this painting especially effective in contemporary interiors.

At40 × 30 inches (102 × 76 cm), it has enough presence to become a focal point without overwhelming the room. Its vertical format works beautifully:

  • Above a console table
  • Over a fireplace or cabinet
  • In an entranceway or hallway
  • In a living room, office or boardroom
  • As part of a collection of Canadian art

The cooler palette complements white, grey, charcoal, navy and natural wood interiors. Warm furnishings or brass lighting will emphasize the yellow and orange reflections in the painting.

Display it in indirect natural light or beneath a warm, focused picture light. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.

Presentation and framing

The painting continues around deep gallery-wrapped canvas edges, which have been finished in black for a clean, contemporary appearance.

It is wired and ready to hang without a frame. A floating frame may be added if you prefer a more formal presentation.
