The story behind Mountain Peaks of Tantalus
The Tantalus Range is one of the defining mountain views of the Sea-to-Sky corridor. These rugged, glacier-filled peaks can be seen from several viewpoints near Squamish, including the Tantalus Lookout along Highway 99.
For Graham, the range represents the scale and energy of British Columbia’s Coast Mountains. The changing alpine light, extensive snowfields and sharp rock formations create a landscape that can feel entirely different from one moment to the next.
In this painting, cool blue shadows describe the structure of the snow-covered peaks. Above them, a warm sunset introduces orange, pink and golden light. This contrast between hot and cold colour gives the painting its drama and depth.
The small skier adds a quiet human story. Surrounded by enormous peaks, the figure becomes a reminder of how small we are within the landscape—and how extraordinary it feels to experience these mountains firsthand.
About the Tantalus Range
Tantalus Provincial Park lies north of Squamish and contains some of the area’s most dramatic mountain peaks, glaciers and alpine terrain. The range can be viewed from the Sea-to-Sky Highway and several trails and viewpoints around Squamish. Tourism Squamish

How this painting works in a room
At 40 inches wide, Mountain Peaks of Tantalus has the visual scale needed to anchor a living space without overwhelming it.
Dominant colours
- Cobalt and deep alpine blue
- Violet and purple
- Snow white
- Fiery orange
- Rose pink
- Warm gold
- Charcoal grey
Mood
The painting feels dramatic, expansive and uplifting. The fiery sky introduces energy, while the blue mountain shadows create a sense of stillness and depth.
Suitable spaces
This original would work particularly well:
- Above a fireplace or console
- In a Whistler or Squamish property
- In a contemporary living room
- In an entranceway or office
- In a ski chalet or mountain home
- Against white, grey, charcoal or natural wood walls
- As part of a Canadian landscape collection
The horizontal format works beautifully above sofas, credenzas and fireplaces. Its combination of warm and cool colours complements stone, wood, leather and contemporary neutral interiors.
Lighting
Indirect natural light will reveal the variations within the snow and sunset sky. A warm-neutral picture light will strengthen the orange and gold while preserving the deep blues.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Canvas and presentation
Mountain Peaks of Tantalus is painted on a substantial 1½-inch-deep gallery-wrapped canvas.
The edges are finished in black, giving the painting a clean, contemporary appearance. It can be displayed without a traditional frame, although a black or natural wood floating frame would provide a more formal finish.
The original is wired and ready to hang. It is signed on the front and signed, titled and dated on the reverse.
