About the Painting

Rain and Reflections at Jack Poole captures downtown Vancouver on an evening when rain turns the city into light.

The towers surrounding Jack Poole Plaza rise into a heavy, cloud-filled sky, while the Fairmont Pacific Rim glows against the cool atmosphere. Across the foreground, wet pavement reflects the buildings and city lights, stretching their colour into an abstract pattern of movement.

The rain is not simply part of the weather—it is what gives the painting its energy. Reflections soften the hard edges of the architecture, combining Vancouver’s glass, light and coastal atmosphere into a scene that feels both familiar and cinematic.

The Story Behind the Painting

Rain changes the visual rhythm of Vancouver. Surfaces that disappear on a dry day become mirrors, and familiar buildings take on a different character as their lights spread across the pavement.

In this painting, Graham focuses on that transformation. Jack Poole Plaza provides an open foreground, allowing the reflections to become as important as the buildings themselves.

Cool blues, greys and deep urban shadows establish the rainy atmosphere. Warmer light from the surrounding architecture breaks through that cool palette, bringing depth and life to the evening scene.

The contrast gives the painting its emotional pull. It feels quiet and reflective at first, yet the moving colour and expressive brushwork suggest a city that remains active beneath the rain.

Why This Painting Works in a Room

Dominant colours
Deep blue, steel grey and charcoal are illuminated by warmer amber, gold and white city lights.

Mood
Atmospheric, reflective and cinematic. It captures the quieter side of downtown Vancouver while retaining the energy of the city.

Room suitability
Well suited to a contemporary living room, downtown condo, office, dining room or Vancouver-inspired interior. Its combination of urban architecture and expressive reflection works particularly well with modern furniture, dark wood, metal and neutral walls.

Visual scale
At 48 inches wide, the painting has enough presence to anchor a substantial wall above a sofa, console, sideboard or desk.

Lighting
Soft daylight will reveal the cooler atmospheric colours. Warm directional lighting in the evening will emphasize the reflected city lights and surface texture. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
